Campaign Background

Thousands of years before the campaign takes places, mages wove spells beyond the comprehension and ability of the spellcasters of today. These mages began searching for a source to power their massive spells that wasn’t so physically draining to themselves. And so, they turned their eyes skyward to the sun and all magical energy it contained. They spent years collecting the world’s best and brightest for a massive spell that would collect the sun’s energy in an artifact called the Core Crystal. Unfortunately for them and the entire world, the spell backfired. The sun was split into two bodies and the world was wracked with earthquakes, chaotic storms, and deadly amounts of radiation. This event would become known as the Sundering and many people today blame all the world’s ills on this single event and the foolish mages who caused it. When the dust settled, the countries of the world rose up and demanded vengeance against those responsible for the catastrophe. This led to the Great War, and the eventual fall of the ancient empires as they lost countless resources and lives without having fully recovered from the World Storms.

Along with the obvious consequences, the second sun also brought a new era to the planet. The radiation from this second sun began causing “interference” with the energies wizards used to craft their spells. This background radiation was also responsible for the birth of chaos magic. Certain individuals possessed the ability to interact with this energy, similar to the way wizards interact with the energy from the first sun, though they do so almost subconsciously. This is the reason people fear them; they lack control over their power. This chaos energy was also responsible for aberration, or the rapid mutation of several species into new ones. Though aberration is practically unheard of in the present day, many of the world’s most fearsome creatures and humanoids are the descendants of the original aberrations that mutated thousands of years ago.

Today, hundreds of fortune seekers flock to ancient ruins in search of pre-Sundering artifacts that still retain a touch of the ancient magic that created them. These artifacts are considered priceless and powerful beyond measure. There are those that would use these artifacts for power and those that seek them for greed.
